Austria – So what’s it like?
Austria is all about the scenery, whether you’re looking out over lakes or walking through flower-strewn meadows – all with lots of culture along the way.
You get the quintessential mountain experience in Austria. Chocolate box villages, cable cars up to the peaks, scenic alpine railways and traditional afternoon coffee and cake. And there are lots of beautiful towns and villages too.
Alpbach, Lech and St Gilgen are often voted Austria’s prettiest mountain villages, along with Saalbach and Ellmau – all picture-perfect and perched up in the heights. Niederau and Obergurgl are peaceful in the summer months and the frescoed houses of Söll and cobbled streets of Bad Hofgastein have lots of character. Or, if you’d prefer to be in a larger town, there’s sophisticated Kitzbuhel, traditional St Wolfgang, scenic Kaprun and the bustling, down-to-earth resorts of Mayrhofen and St Johann to choose from.
All our Austrian resorts are surrounded by mountains, and some of them sit beside sparkling lakes too, cold, but amazing for a dip. You can relax on the waterfront paths in Seefeld or explore the historical lakeside centres of St Wolfgang, Zell am See and Fuschl am See.
Austrian culture isn’t all about Lederhosen and Schnitzel – although you would definitely encounter both. It’s also known for its wonderful churches and palaces, its musical history and the enchanting folk tales that fill its mountains. And with local events through the summer – from St Johann’s dumpling festival to the Kitzbuhel hops festival – you can sample the best of the culture whilst on your season.
