Meet Jez Clarke
What does your job involve?
I travel to my destinations working with our key suppliers looking for new opportunities to grow our M7 portfolio and manage a team of Purchasing Managers. Of course, I have to manage the day-to-day challenges with my team as well, which involve cost & risk control and ensuring contracting compliance.
Why did your choose to work for TUI?
When I joined the company it was then Thomson Holidays Ltd. However, the values of TUI are much the same today as they were back in the day. I wanted to join a standout company that was best in the industry so that I could develop my core skills whilst having fun, too.
What’s the best thing about your team?
Dedication & team work. My team are totally focussed on delivering the best commercial terms possible and will always go the extra mile when asked. What I most admire is that they support each other when needed, even when they are already busy.
What skills & experience have you developed whilst working in Purchasing?
Where do I start? The Purchasing role has really evolved over the years. We now have to fully understand the Trading position of our destinations to ensure we have the best commercial terms available during peak booking windows and in the Lates market. Moreover, I have become an expert in waterslide design after countless new Splash hotels I have contracted. Our Splash in Bulgaria was built in 6 months, so I was very involved with the design & delivery. Therefore, helping suppliers develop our concept design is a key skill I have developed.
My team is multi-cultural, with managers from Belgium, Holland, UK and Spain all living in different parts of Europe. This means I have really had to develop my distance management skills and take into account that not everyone understands the British idioms & humour!
What is your favourite holiday destination?
The million dollar question – I’ve worked from Mallorca to Maldives, but the one place I feel most relaxed in is Pto Pollensa, Mallorca!
What motivates and inspires you in your role?
Seeing the end product after months of hard work. I contracted the first Sensatori in Crete, it is amazing to see a concept morph from a small project to one of TUI’s exclusive M7 concepts.
What makes you smile?
Listening to the excitement of a new arrival in one of our concepts, for example the swim-up rooms. After months of working with a supplier on the concept & then seeing the excitement on our guests’ faces always makes me smile.
Why would you recommend TUI as a great place to work?
We are industry leaders and we offer an amazing range of opportunities across the business. You can choose from IT to airline, from retail to marketing and so on. At TUI we really encourage our colleagues to work across the different source markets and promote careers in other divisions. Recently a colleague has just been seconded from the UK to Stockholm and another one from P&P to retail. TUI is perfect for someone wanting to travel whilst working for a dynamic company that sells amazing experiences all over the world.
