Meet Julia Kaminski
What does your job involve?
I am responsible for the hotel contracting in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. This involves negotiation and signing off the hotel contracts with the hotel partners, accountability for the optimisation of the hotel cost base and risk levels, management of supplier strategy and establishing long term relationships between TUI and the hotel partners. In most cases I am the first point of contact and face for the hotel partners in the destinations. I am involved in the strategic development and implementation of the destinations’ 5 year plan for the relevant source markets.
Why did your choose to work for TUI?
I joined TUI on the International Graduate Programme. At that time I was looking for an international career and TUI was the company with a wealth of international opportunities for me to explore. Of course, as probably everybody at TUI, I could also easily connect with the product as I love to travel. Now, six years later and having finished the graduate programme for almost five years, I can look back at having worked and gained experiences in many different countries as well as different international roles and I am still very excited about the growth opportunities within TUI.
What’s the best thing about your team?
Our team is very international and it is great to work together with colleagues from different countries and cultures and to learn from each other. At the same time our team spirit is very good, and despite the fact that we are all working towards stretching deadlines, travel frequently to long-haul destinations and are based in different countries, everybody still helps each other out.
What skills & experience have you developed whilst working in Purchasing?
One of the skills I definitely developed further during my current role is to make quick decisions. During negotiations with a hotel partner it is important to be able to think on your feet and to evaluate proposals and the discussions quickly. Efficient time management and prioritisation is another crucial factor in my daily job as I am the contact person not only for the hotel partners for several destinations, but also for internal colleagues from Product, Sales, Trading, Yield, Destination Services etc. Along with stretching deadline targets and managing my own time, focusing on the urgent points is also necessary to get the job done. Furthermore, negotiating, building relationships as well as influencing external and internal partners on all hierarchical levels are skills that I use every day and these experiences are also good to have in other fields and roles.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
I enjoy discovering different countries and cultures during my holiday. Therefore, it is very rare that I go back to the same destination again soon after. A good mix of culture, adventure and beach relaxation is ideal for me. My favourite destinations, Sri Lanka and Maldives, provide actually the perfect mix for that.
What motivates and inspires you in your role?
Being able to work internationally and also having a direct influence on TUI’s business performance as well as bringing growth to the destinations I am responsible for. At the same time, to have the opportunity to learn new things every day and to develop myself further
What makes you smile?
A lot of things, including friends, family, colleagues, sometimes also strangers on the street. Nice moments and experiences. Memories of my past holidays and the planning of future ones.
